CANTON — Bob Washo, a registered Independent, dedicated community leader and former two-term Canton Town Councilman, officially announced his campaign for the St. Lawrence County Legislative District 8 seat in the November 2026 election. Washo will be bringing a wealth of experience in local governance and resilient community planning to the county level.

Washo’s priorities include fiscal responsibility, transparency and equitably serving all St. Lawrence County residents.

“For over two decades, I have been deeply rooted in Canton, working collaboratively to implement real, tangible improvements” Washo said. “I strive for a balance between growing community while preserving our natural world. I am running to ensure the St. Lawrence County government operates with due diligence and forward thinking, while serving as a watchful eye against improper spending and promoting the shared services necessary for our county to thrive at all levels of government.”

Proven Record of Local Leadership and Fiscal Prudence

Washo’s commitment extends beyond municipal governance into the perseverance it takes to survive and thrive in our rural landscape. As a co-operator, with his partner, M. “Flip” Filippi, of littleGrasse Community Farm and a homesteader in Canton, he respects the long history of hard working people who have built their own livelihoods in unique and creative ways. This DIY spirit is an integral part of the fabric of the North Country.

A key highlight of his work includes his service on the USDA Local Food, Local Places Task Force, which was instrumental in the concept and construction of the Harvest Kitchen at the Extension Learning Farm, a shared-use facility operated by Cornell Cooperative Extension of St. Lawrence County. This Kitchen now serves as a vital incubator, supporting dozens of small business startups and hosting the Fresh-cut Farm to School Program.

Washo is a co-founder of the St. Lawrence Land Trust and has collaborated with local universities to host students through internships and community-based learning placements.
